Facebook first ‘bought’ Instagram – the popular social photography app – back in April 2012 and got State approval for the acquisition in August.

Instagram aims to provide a platform on which to take and share photographs whilst retaining the magic of film
Today, after closing the deal, both companies re-assured their users that the camera and photo-sharing app – which was launched in October 2010 – will not disappear and both parties will look forward to working together to ‘build a better Instagram’.
Instagram wrote on their blog:
‘While our team is making the short move to the Facebook offices, Instagram isn’t going anywhere. The Instagram app and its features will stay the same one you know and love, and we’ll keep working together to build a better Instagram for everyone.’
Meanwhile Facebook posted:
‘As we said from the beginning, we are committed to building and growing Instagram independently. Instagram will continue to serve its community, and we will help Instagram continue to grow by using Facebook’s strong engineering team and infrastructure. We also can’t wait to work with the talented Instagram team to improve the mobile experience.’
Instagram reports that it has shared over 5 billion photos to date and recently hit 80 million users. Facebook currently has over 955 million active users on it’s social networking website – half of those connecting via a mobile device.
It’ll be interesting to see what developments appear in the Instagram and Facebook Camera apps over the coming months. Watch this space as they say!
